frequently asked questions - rafting

What kind of rafting trips do you have?

We offer three different rafting trips, adapted to different age groups and levels:

  • Family rafting: Suitable for children from 8 years and up
  • Super rafting: For participants aged 12 and over, with more action and exciting rapids.
  • Extreme/Viking Rafting: For the adventurous aged 15+, with technical and challenging rapids that provide an adrenaline-filled experience.

Can we combine different tours?

Yes, all trips can be combined based on age and wishes. You can be on the same trip and in the same boat, but those who don’t want to raft through the biggest rapids can drive around with the bus.

It is also possible to walk around the largest rapids with a guide and watch the other participants raft before getting back on board.

Feel free to contact us and we will help you find the best solution for your group.

  • At high water levels we can have up to 8 people in a raft, while at low water levels there is room for a maximum of 4 people to ensure stability and safety.
  • If you would like a private raft for your group only, this can also be booked for groups of minimum 3 people.

What should I bring when rafting?

  • Towel and something to wear under a wetsuit:
  • Swimwear or wool underwear/socks on cooler days.

What kind of equipment will I receive?

You will receive a wetsuit, wet shoes, life jacket and helmet. This is included in the price of rafting.

Do you have all sizes?

Yes, we have equipment to suit all shapes and sizes, and for participants from around 8 years and up.

What should I wear under the wetsuit?

We recommend wool or super underwear on cool days. On warmer days, swimwear or regular underwear is sufficient.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Yes, if you have your own wetsuit and wet shoes, you can use them. Our guides will make sure that your equipment is suitable for the trip.

I have medication that needs to be taken with me. What should I do?

That’s fine! Just let us know when you arrive and we’ll help you find a solution. Medication can be stored on the bus or your guide can bring it in a waterproof bag in the life jacket.

Where do I put my valuables?

Valuables can be locked in the office.

We do not recommend bringing valuables on the bus, as it will be left unlocked when the bus driver walks between the bus and the river.

We cannot guarantee the opening date 100%, as this depends on temperature and water level.

Yes, you are welcome to bring your own food for after the rafting. You’re often very hungry afterwards! We can also reserve a fire pit if you want to have a barbecue after the rafting trip. Just let us know in advance.

Do you have a café?

Unfortunately, we don’t have a café, but we offer free coffee to our guests and sell mineral water and ice.

Do you have showers?

  • No, we’re a simple wilderness camp and unfortunately we don’t have showers.
  • There is access to toilets and sinks at the rest area, and we have simple changing rooms where you can change.

Photos and video

  • Our photos and videos are taken by our bus driver, not professional photographers. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know in advance.
  • After the tour, you can view the photos and videos on the base and you have the opportunity to buy a link to all the photos.

Why do we charge extra for photos?

It’s a lot of extra work for our bus driver to take photos and videos during the trip. However, we keep our prices much lower than many other places.

How long are the photos stored?

The photos are stored for one year and you can contact us during this year to get access to them.

Why can’t we raft some rapids at high water levels?

When the water level is high, the rapids become stronger and it can be challenging to navigate safely. There can also be strong currents between the rapids, making it difficult to get participants back into the raft before the next rapid. For the safety of all participants, we therefore choose to avoid these areas when the water level is high.

Why do we sometimes have to drive around sections of the river?

At certain water levels, the largest rapids can be too demanding. For your safety, we run a bus around these rapids. Sometimes it is only the children who are driven around. When the water level is lower, the children can often go through the same rapids that they have to drive around at higher water levels.

Why do the tours vary so much?

There are many factors that affect how long a rafting trip lasts. The water level not only determines which sections are used, but also how fast the river flows. When the water level is high, the river runs faster and we often don’t have to drive as far to the starting point.

Although a shorter route may be chosen, we always do our utmost to give you an experience that is both exciting and eventful, with many rapids and technical challenges, adapted to today’s conditions.

Are there guides/instructors on the tour?

Yes, all our tours are led by experienced and skilled guides

Each raft has one guide, but we always have a minimum of two guides on each trip – one who may be in another raft or in a kayak for extra safety.

Why do you have so many foreign guides?

The Numedalslågen is a highly technical river, and we rely on highly experienced guides to ensure quality and safety.

In Norway, the rafting profession is seasonal, which makes it difficult to build up enough experience over time. That’s why we bring in guides from countries such as Zimbabwe, Nepal, Australia and South America.

Is rafting safe?

Rafting involves a certain amount of risk. We follow strict safety procedures, and our experienced guides do their best to minimize the risk and give you an exciting experience.

Can I raft if I’m pregnant?

We do not recommend rafting for pregnant women, as there is some risk involved.

Is there an age limit for rafting?

Family rafting is for children from 8 years old, Super Rafting from 12 years old, and Extreme Rafting from 15 years old.

The age limits apply to the age the child reaches during the year.

I don’t know how to swim. Can I go rafting?

Yes, at Family rafting there is no requirement for swimming skills, so this is perfectly fine. But it is important that we are informed in advance.

At Super rafting, we can allow participants who cannot swim, but this must be agreed in advance.

For Viking Rafting, on the other hand, all participants are required to be able to swim, as it is a more demanding trip with a greater risk of falling out.

Do we need to do a swim test before the rafting trip?

No, we do not require a swim test before rafting. Although some operators do this, we believe it does not provide a positive start to the experience. Our guides are highly skilled at assessing their guests and making sure everyone has a safe trip. If it’s really hot, we can take an optional swim to cool down in our wetsuits before we start.

What happens if I fall out of the raft?

Our guides are trained to deal with such situations, and you will receive a thorough safety briefing before the tour so that you are also prepared should such a situation arise.

Will I get wet?

Yes, everyone gets wet because of splashes from the water. Those sitting at the front of the raft often get more wet than those sitting further back.

Am I going to fall out?

We can never guarantee that no one will fall out of the raft. The risk is greater on extreme trips with larger rapids, but our guides are well trained to handle such situations.

Will the raft flip?

It can happen, but it doesn’t happen very often. It’s most likely to happen on our extreme surfing trips, when participants are also extra prepared for it to happen. However, we can never guarantee that it won’t happen.

I am very scared. Any recommendation?

It’s okay to be nervous! Please inform us in advance and especially your guide. We can place you at the back of the raft with your guide, who will take extra good care of you.

Can anyone come along and watch the rafting?

  • Upon request and available capacity, it may be possible to join the bus to observe rafting.
  • Please note that the bus driver often has little time on certain routes and cannot ensure that everyone is back in the bus on time, as it is important that he is in place at the next stop for safety reasons.
  • We recommend that you follow with your own car. Please note that the road is a toll road and you will be invoiced afterwards. With your own car, you can also travel back to the base whenever you want.

Is there free parking?

Yes, there is free parking at our base.

How do we get to the river?

Serious Fun has its own shuttle bus that takes you to and from the river. At certain water levels, it may be possible to walk from the river back to the base.
